Shock Physics Graduate Scholar Award

The Institute for Shock Physics (ISP), a multi-disciplinary research organization in the College of Sciences, provides Graduate Scholar Awards to outstanding students who commence their Ph.D. studies in the Department of Physics.

The initial award is for one year (two academic semesters, plus summer) with annual renewals for students making satisfactory progress. Normally, the total duration of each award will be for a maximum of 5 years. ISP Graduate Scholars carry out their Ph.D. research work in the Institute for Shock Physics. There are no teaching responsibilities associated with this award.

Seth Root from the ISP With support from the Department of Energy in 1997, Washington State University established the Institute for Shock Physics. The Institute builds on more than four decades of scientific excellence and leadership by the physics faculty in this challenging field. Seth Root, left, is a scholar award recipient from ISP.

The focus of the Institute’s research activities is on understanding physical and chemical changes in condensed matter subjected to shock wave and high pressure compression. State-of-the-art capabilities exist for examining fundamental processes at different length scales. Physics graduates in this field have moved on to very successful professional careers.
